Our project to monitor endangered sea turtles (Caretta Caretta and Chenolia Mydas) through the installation of satellite tracking devices has been initiated. The scope of our global funding project is to determine the priorities of sea turtles (caretta caretta and chelonia mydas) regarding their survival, actively protect sea and beach areas, and monitor these creatures by installing satellite tracking devices in order to better understand the impact of climate change on sea turtles. Two turtles have already been sent to the sea with the attached satellite tracking devices. By the end of August, satellite tracking devices will be installed on 6 more Turtles in the sandy beaches of the Mersin Region, which covers the Project area.
These satellite devices will be integrated to a total of 8 sea turtles. The project will continue being monitored by Prof.Dr. Serap ERGENE ÜZDİYEN and her team at the Mersin University’s Sea Turtles Application and Research Center. Information about turtles' migration routes, feeding and wintering areas will be collected. This information is then aimed to be transformed into creating a map that will display the migration routes and depth on the web page. In addition, it is aimed to inform and raise awareness of locals and tourists through sharing the photographs and videos taken and the information obtained with the public.
The data collected from the satellite tracking devices will be broadcast live on the web pages of the D2430 Rotary Clubs and Mersin University. The information collected will then be used to inform and educate students, fishermen, tourism businesses and the general public to protect sea turtle habitats.
The project was prepared by Mersin Kızkalesi Rotary Club in 2022-23 Rotary year as one of the district goals of the Governor of 2022-23 Emre Ozturk was to do the first Environmental Global Grant Project of D2430 . Project was financed by Adana, Adana Güney, Toros, Akdeniz, Ankara Gazi, Antalya, Ankara Beysukent, Diyarbakır, Ekaterinburg and Madrid-Serrano Rotary clubs, Districts 2430, 7680, 2223 and the Rotary Foundation.
Thank you to everyone who played part in helping this project come to life.
