Membership leaders from across Europe and Africa came together in Zurich for the EAO Regional Membership Summit 2026, a dynamic two-day event dedicated to shaping the future of Rotary membership. Bringing together Regional Membership Coordinators (RMCs), Regional Public Image Coordinators (RPICs), Strategic Leaders, Rotary staff, and Membership Growth Committee members, the summit focused on strengthening collaboration, sharing innovative ideas, and developing practical action plans to accelerate Rotary’s growth.
The summit was honored by the participation of Olayinka Babalola, whose inspiring remarks emphasized that sustainable membership growth depends on creating meaningful experiences for members, building vibrant clubs, and embracing Rotary’s vision for the future.
The first day began with an overview of Rotary’s global membership priorities and recommended growth targets. Participants reviewed the three essential pillars of membership growth before engaging in highly interactive brainstorming sessions centered on three strategic themes:
Attracting new members
Engaging and retaining existing members
Creating new clubs to expand Rotary’s reach
Working in mixed regional groups, participants exchanged successful practices, innovative ideas, and practical experiences from different parts of Europe and Africa. The collaborative format encouraged open dialogue and enabled leaders to learn from one another while identifying solutions that can be adapted to local needs.
The afternoon sessions shifted the focus toward regional planning. Teams analyzed their unique strengths and opportunities, discussed barriers to membership growth, and explored ways Regional Membership Coordinators and Regional Public Image Coordinators can work together more effectively. The discussions reinforced that membership growth and public image are closely connected and achieve the greatest impact when coordinated strategically.
Region 24 and Region 25 Rotary Membership Coordinators Suncica Balat and M. Hakan Karaalioglu expressed that they have started to use their teams as “ Bridge Team” and became very happy that ICC magazine is named BRIDGE.
A significant portion of the summit was dedicated to developing personalized Regional Action Plans. Each regional leader prepared measurable goals, implementation strategies, timelines, and success indicators designed to support Rotary’s long-term membership vision. These plans reflected the diverse realities of each region while remaining aligned with Rotary International’s global priorities.
On the second day, participants refined their action plans by identifying practical strategies and measurable outcomes. Each regional team presented its plan to fellow leaders, receiving valuable feedback and exchanging ideas that further strengthened the proposed initiatives.
The summit concluded with an engaging brainstorming session on recognition and reinforcement strategies designed to encourage membership growth. Participants shared creative approaches to recognizing clubs, district leaders, and members who demonstrate excellence in attracting, engaging, and retaining members. These discussions highlighted the importance of celebrating achievement as a powerful motivator for sustained membership development.
Throughout the summit, the atmosphere was characterized by collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to Rotary’s future. The carefully designed program provided participants with practical tools, fresh perspectives, and renewed enthusiasm to implement effective membership strategies throughout their respective regions.
Beyond the formal sessions, the warm hospitality of the Zurich organizing team, combined with opportunities for fellowship and cultural experiences, further strengthened friendships and reinforced the spirit of international collaboration that defines Rotary.
The EAO Regional Membership Summit 2026 demonstrated that sustainable membership growth is achieved not only through ambitious goals but also through strong leadership, effective partnerships, innovative thinking, and a genuine commitment to creating an outstanding Rotary experience for every member. The action plans developed during the summit will now guide regional efforts over the coming years as Rotary continues working toward a stronger, more vibrant, and more impactful future.
